Monochromatic Paper Sculpture

Students will transform 2D paper into sculptural elements that create rich textures in three dimensions. Techniques for creating sculptural elements from high quality papers (including folding techniques, fraying, cutting, crunching, rolling, and more) will be taught to help students achieve a variety of elements to build their sculpture up on a cylinder or cone base working in all white to reveal shadows and depth in their 3D composition.

INNOVATION COMPONENTS:

Students will transform 2D paper into sculptural elements that create rich textures in three dimensions. Techniques for creating sculptural elements from high quality papers ( including folding techniques, fraying, cutting, crunching, rolling, and more) will be taught to help students achieve a variety of elements to build their sculpture up on a cylinder or cone base working in all white to reveal shadows and depth in their 3D composition. This project involves students using organizational principles to solve the problem of constructing a 3D structure using 2D materials. Students will experiment with different techniques learning to discern which techniques result in the most functional building components for their structures.

CAREER COMPONENT: Fabricators work in many different materials like paper, wood, metal, and clay to create samples called prototypes of inventor’s ideas. They find ways to solve the problems they face when trying to take an idea from a flat drawing into a real object.
