Relief Printmaking

Students will explore printmaking through scratch foam prints. Traditional printmaking techniques such as wood blocks, intaglio, and lithography involve complex methods of preparing printing plates (carving wood with sharp tools, scratching metal plates with needles or using chemical treatments on stone). Scratch Foam plates allow students to easily create an image that can be printed (and re-printed) using acrylic paint and a brayer.

CAREER COMPONENT:

This project provides a great example of working in relief and in reverse. Prints are the mirror image of the printing plate that students create which causes them to think critically about their designs.
