“After nourishment, shelter, and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” -Phillip Pullman
The importance of quality reading programs is no mystery. At the Creative Plains Foundation, we utilize our access to local literary experts, teachers, authors, and even illustrators, in order to increase literacy among our youth and convey the importance of reading and storytelling.
Our reading program consists of teen book clubs, book giveaways, and our Children’s Literary Hour.
Children’s Literary Hour
Catering to those between the ages of 2 and 8 years old, our Children’s Literary Hour is a monthly reading event. Taught by teachers, literary experts, and authors, children will participate in a book reading, followed by a small creative workshop. At the completion of the workshop, each child will be rewarded with their very own copy of that month’s book.
Teen Book Club
Catering to kids aged 10 and up, our Teen Book Club is a monthly book reading, and discussion, club. The theme of these books will change from month to month and range from Classic Literature to Fantasy. Kids will then have the opportunity to discuss the book among peers and gain deeper insight into the vast array of literature genres. Our instructors will host these discussions in one of our classrooms, or through an online discussion board.
One of the most effective ways to improve literacy among children is to encourage them to read at home. Unfortunately, not every child is fortunate enough to have access to quality books. Each month Creative Plains will donate a number of books to kids, schools, and other organizations. While these donations aim to improve child literacy and boost imagination, it is our hope that these children also realize the positive impact of giving.
