“After nourishment, shelter, and companionship, stories are the thing we need most in the world.” -Phillip Pullman
The importance of quality reading programs is no mystery. At the Creative Plains Foundation, we utilize our access to local literary experts, teachers, authors, and even illustrators, in order to increase literacy among our youth and convey the importance of reading and storytelling.
Our reading program consists of youth book clubs, book giveaways, and our Children’s Book Readings.
Children’s Book Readings
Catering to a variety of ages, our book reading events are led by local teachers, literary experts, and authors. Children participate in a reading and discussion which is often followed by a creative workshop. At the completion of these events, each child receives their very own copy of the book.
Youth Book Club
Catering to youth, our book club events consist of readings that are followed by a review and discussion of key elements of the book. The genre of books will vary and range from classic literature to fantasy. Youth have the opportunity to discuss the book with their peers and gain deeper insight into the plot and varying perspectives of the story. Our instructors will host these discussions in one of our classrooms, or through an online discussion board.
One of the most effective ways to improve literacy among children is to encourage them to read at home. Unfortunately, not every child is fortunate enough to have access to quality books. Each month Creative Plains will donate a number of books to kids, schools, and other organizations. While these donations aim to improve child literacy and boost imagination, it is our hope that these children also realize the positive impact of giving.
