Once a standard in a student’s education, the skills of sewing and knowledge of textiles are rarely taught in school settings or at home. Our textile program aims to teach students the real life skills of sewing, mending, and upcycling while exploring the creative outlet of fashion design.
SEWING & FABRIC DESIGN
Sewing & Fabric Design is a free, income-based program open to students in grades 4-12. Students will learn how to use a sewing machine, master basic stitching, follow sewing patterns,
understand fabric types and explore ways to customize fabric. They will also be exposed to career options in the textile industry and learn how to brand and sell products. Participants will be selected based on their interest in textiles and their annual household income level or demonstrated need to attend.
Program runs March 26th - May 14th, 2020
Class is held every Thursday from 4-5:30pm at Creative Plains Foundation.
Our textile program will not only teach students basic sewing skills, it will dig deep into the art of expression through fabric, a medium that many young people personally connect with. With multi-week programs offering in-depth explorations of techniques and tools and shorter, project based programming we aim to empower students with a skill set that will serve them for a lifetime.
